"It was Awesome!"

That was the common reaction to the Morale, Welfare and Recreation event organized by the Maryland Army National Guard’s 1st Battalion, 175th Infantry Regiment during its Annual Training in June at Fort Pickett, Va.

In the midst of training for the battalion’s upcoming deployment to the Sinai Peninsula, the unit leadership organized an introductory scuba diving trip to Lake Rawlings to help the Soldiers unwind. Located only a few miles southeast of Fort Pickett, Lake Rawlings is one of the premier scuba training sites on the east coast.

Nine Soldiers who had been previously certified in scuba diving were given a refresher course which included a review of equipment, techniques, safety and dive tables. Their class culminated with two dives to a sunken school bus and airplane. Twenty-four Soldiers, who had never before experienced scuba diving, underwent the Professional Association of Dive Instructors “Discover Scuba Diving” class, which covered basic diving concepts and skills followed by a dive under the direct supervision of divemasters.
